Civil Engineering (Structural Engineering)

About Department

Structural engineering is a sub-discipline of civil engineering in which structural engineers are trained to design the 'bones and joints' that create the form and shape of human-made structures. Structural engineers also must understand and calculate the stability, strength, rigidity and earthquake-susceptibility of built structures for buildings and nonbuilding structures. The structural designs are integrated with those of other designers such as architects and building services engineers and often supervise the construction of projects by contractors on site.

Structural engineering theory is based upon applied physical laws and empirical knowledge of the structural performance of different materials and geometries. Structural engineering design uses a number of relatively simple structural concepts to build complex structural systems. Structural engineers are responsible for making creative and efficient use of funds, structural elements and materials to achieve these goals.

●  Vision and Mission

Vision

To achieve Excellence in Technology, Innovation and Research in higher education of Civil Engineering in an ethical way to Lead and Serve the Nation with integrity and credibility.

Mission

  • Create and develop a sustained environment of learning.

  • To produce high caliber and dynamic Civil Engineers with due consideration of Economy, Ecology and Ethical issues of the nation.

  • To provide highly competent Civil Engineers to society and the construction industry.

  • To assist in developing nation capabilities globally with respect to Science, Technology and Research.

In the structural design sector, structural consultancy laboratories are essential areas for testing, research, and training. By evaluating materials, testing structural integrity, and looking into geotechnical characteristics, they play a vital part in assuring the sustainability, safety, and durability of constructed environments. These labs also facilitate failure analysis, research and development.

The department is equipped with state-of-the-art labs where the theoretical courses are supplemented by imparting practical experience. The department has 3 major laboratories:

·           Concrete Lab

·           Earthquake Engineering Lab

·           Computer Lab

Concrete Lab

The Concrete Technology Laboratory of Civil Engineering program provides hands-on experience in testing cement and aggregates, evaluating concrete workability, and conducting compressive strength tests.  Students learn concrete mix design as per IS codes and explore non-destructive testing methods, enhancing their understanding of concrete properties and quality control.

Our Concrete Lab equipped with the following experimental setup:

·           Compression Testing Machine

·           Cement mortar vibrating machine

·           Rebound hammer

·           Concrete mixer

·           Different Mould cast

·           Abrasion resistance machine

·           Impact Value test

Earthquake Engineering Lab

Earthquake Engineering Labs are essential for understanding the impact of earthquakes on structures, informing design and construction practices, and developing strategies to mitigate seismic risk.

Earthquake Engineering Labs play a crucial role in enhancing the safety and reliability of infrastructure in seismic-prone regions. Engineers need to know the quantified level of the actual or anticipated seismic performance associated with the direct damage to an individual building subject to a specified ground shaking. Such an assessment may be performed either experimentally or analytically.

  Computer Lab

The Computer Lab provides a convenient approach for civil engineering planning, drawing and drafting the report. Students of UG and PG courses can get professional training on 2D & 3D drafting of civil engineering drawings with the help of AutoCAD. The students will also learn design and drafting, necessary for the civil-engineering discipline.
